My husband was driving me to work this morning and we passed a house on the corner of 8th north and 2nd west, where we have often seen a woman with a very unique hairdo taking her garbage can to the curb. This morning we realized that it was an "Eraserhead" hairdo, and this led to a discussion about whether it is possible to like the movie (zach says so) or if it is just something you say you like to prove what kind of person you are (this i my explanation). First of all, eraserhead hairdo: Second of all, here is the plot line diagram of a typically enjoyable story: and here is the plot line diagram for Eraserhead: There is nothing to like about the film. I dare you to disagree with me.

oh. my. shit.
i'm disappointed and alienated and confused.
eraserhead is my favorite movie. i am so so fond of it. i don't say that to sound cool, it justs speaks to something deep inside me. most of david lynch's films do. it just depends on what you like. i think you can't really search for "meaning" though; he just likes to work in symbols and images. some people find that evocative - you bring some of your own meaning to it. also i think that the real world doesn't make a lot of sense so art probably shouldn't. personally i've never come across a director who communicates to me better. but then i think TV is far better with the sound off. and i'm told i like weird stuff.

my husband would tend to agree with you. I don't get it.

and maybe I came on strong with the "proving what kind of person you are" comment. but I disagree with the idea that the real world doesn't make a lot of sense. I think things are connected in a great balancing act that adds up zero at the end of the day (week, year, lifetime, or eternity). And the great thing about being a rational being is that you can rationalize anything, so you may as well. For example:
it was pretty bitchy of me to say that for one to claim enjoyment of this film is not to tell the truth, but rather to brand themself. as a consequence, some little punk ass 6th grader told me that I smelled like bananas mixed with poop, but mostly poop, as i was walking home today.
I was a bitch and therefore was bitched. I got what I deserved despite the fact that I happened to smell like Dr. Bronner's Eucalyptus soap (and not poop).

Eraserhead really really disturbed me, but I think in a good way. I enjoyed it, but perhaps that's because it's like nothing I've seen before. Once again, really creepy film, all the movements and noises were stress inducing.
