bob marely pretty much started reggaeeeee. i think he deserves a "happy birthday" thread at least. Well...Toots Hibbert, but Bob really popularized it. If you like Marley check out Toots and the Maytals its some good stuff. That could be up for debate also, The Paragons i believe were before Toots time and they played a ton of reggae rhythms. Also Jackie Mittoo could have had an important role in that also, and obviously Lloyd Knibbs helped create the rhythm by slowing it down. Toots' song "Do The Reggay" coined the term reggae more than actually created the rhythm, just like Marley popularized it.

Amanda, I think you'd be right in saying that Bob Marley popularized reggae; if it wasn't for Bob, reggae definately wouldn't be what it is today. Oh, and I don't think that you can downplay Bob because white kids listen to him. I argue that if weren't for white kids, Jamaican music would have remained widely unknown, and possibly would have died out. Go to Jamaica now, you'll get a lot of dancehall and some new forms of reggae. As for the old stuff, good luck.
