That could be up for debate also, The Paragons i believe were before Toots time and they played a ton of reggae rhythms. Also Jackie Mittoo could have had an important role in that also, and obviously Lloyd Knibbs helped create the rhythm by slowing it down. Toots' song "Do The Reggay" coined the term reggae more than actually created the rhythm, just like Marley popularized it.
I agree with Adam. Reggae isn't as old as we may think.
Amanda, I think you'd be right in saying that Bob Marley popularized reggae; if it wasn't for Bob, reggae definately wouldn't be what it is today.
Oh, and I don't think that you can downplay Bob because white kids listen to him. I argue that if weren't for white kids, Jamaican music would have remained widely unknown, and possibly would have died out.
Go to Jamaica now, you'll get a lot of dancehall and some new forms of reggae. As for the old stuff, good luck.
im not downplaying marley cause white kids listen to him, im downplaying white kids for making him their idol
that which does not kill me can only make me stronger, but these words still hold no truth, scars to prove it...
He isn't my idol, but I understand his musical genius. And I'll admit that white people were pretty stupid about the whole, I'll take these diffrent colored people and make them do everything for me and if they don't I'll kill them, thing. And Marley likes to talk about that a lot. But I can say he's my idol.

Yeah old ska and reggae in Jamaica now is uncool to the young kids, it's what their old, boring parents listened to. It's kind of like how the oldies are to a lot of our younger generation.

I like Bob Marley, but he isn't my idol, and to be honest, I don't think most people consider him to be much of an idol, either. How many white kids do you know who know enough about Marley to pattern their lives after him?
And to be honest, anyone who plays a guitar for a living will never be my "idol." Let the truth be said.
What musical genius? As I recall he got famous for his polital views... But I respect no man that dies of "cancer of the toe"... wuss! And don't try and pull that "governmental conspiracy" crap, that's just BS a D&D gamer would believe
